FLSA:  Exempt

 

REPORTS TO:  Chief Officer of Academics and Student Affairs

 

SUPERVISES:  None

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:  10 months

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Current North Carolina Teacher Licensure
  • NC Licensure in Academically Gifted Education (88087)
  • Minimum of five years successful classroom teaching experience, preferred
  • Master’s Degree in Education, preferred

NATURE OF WORK:  Under general supervision, the AIG Teacher/Coordinator plans, organizes and provides direct and indirect instruction to students, promotes advanced learning opportunities for all students, and collaborates with school personnel to ensure differentiation for all AIG learners is administered while also coordinating all aspects of the AIG program.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Experience in the education of gifted students.
  • Knowledge of curriculum best practices.
  • Strong knowledge of North Carolina Standard Course of Study.
  • Strong content knowledge in language arts and math.
  • Demonstrated exemplary teaching techniques and effective interpersonal skills with students, administrators, colleagues, and parents.
  • Ability to conduct professional development for teachers and administrators.
  • Ability to disaggregate, interpret, and analyze assessment data.
  • Considerable knowledge of the county and school board policies, procedures, and standards regarding K-12 education.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. This list is meant to be representative, not exhaustive.   1. Serves AIG students throughout the district.

     

  2. Consults with teachers on differentiation of instructional strategies and curriculum for gifted students.

     

  3. Serves as a liaison with administrators and counselors regarding gifted needs and services.

     

  4. Coordinates and provides on-going staff development opportunities at the district and school levels.

     

  5. Coordinates all AIG referral, screening and identification procedures.

     

  6. Completes all AIG paperwork and shares at subsequent AIG team meetings, and parent conferences.

     

  7. Administers testing at individual school sites.

     

  8. Ensures system-wide implementation of the local AIG plan and accountability of the AIG program.

     

  9. Represents the AIG program at local, regional, state and/or national meetings.

     

  10. Maintains electronic and hard copy data on identified AIG students, including accurate Child Count data.

     

  11. Stays abreast of research based instructional strategies by attending professional development sessions and reading professional educational research.

     

  12. Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.

PHYSICAL AND COGNITIVE REQUIREMENTS:  The major physical and cognitive requirements listed below are applicable to the AIG Teacher/Coordinator job classification within the Curriculum & Instruction Department of Martin County Schools.

 

Work in this classification is considered light physical work requiring the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects.

 

Must be able to:

  • Operate a variety of equipment including computers, copiers, document cameras, and LCD projectors
  • Operate a motor vehicle
  • Compare, interpret, analyze and generate data and apply basic principles of statistics
  • Listen and communicate effectively in order to gather, convey or exchange information, including giving instructions, assignments or directions to subordinates or assistants
  • Respond appropriately to inquires or complaints
  • Use tact and courtesy when working and dealing with community
  • Read, comprehend, and prepare various kinds of communication and information including emails, correspondence, reports, articles, proposals, contracts, policies, charts, spreadsheets,  curriculum documents, staff development plans, educational forms and data
  • Write using prescribed formats and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction, and style
  • Speak before groups of people with poise, voice control and confidence
  • Apply principles of logical, critical, creative or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
  • Deal with abstract and concrete variables
  • Demonstrate and apply common sense understanding to carry out simple instruction and to make simple decisions
  • Interpret, infer, analyze, synthesize, and evaluate materials, resources, situations and problems to generate options and solutions
